Natural Fantasy Workshop - Approaching children emotional well-being through biomaterials and sustainable creative means.
This a workshop for teachers. Various studies have proven that the lack of children engagement with nature has been implicated in health issues, especially in reduction of emotional well-being.
Natural Fantasy is an explorative experience for kids to raise their emotional awareness and nurture their relationship with nature, as a key element to improve their physical and mental well-being, as well as their relation with other beings. Various studies have proven that the lack of children engagement with nature has been implicated in health issues, especially in reduction of emotional well-being, which is also translated in disconnection with self, as outlined by Layard and Dunn (2009).
During the workshop, we'll be using different tools to grasp, dialogue and finally release the emotions. The process is built in a creative and fun way combining tools like value cards, storytelling, meditation, natural inks, and biomaterials.
Target: Specially designed for Art and Health educators, however, everyone is welcome to join.
The hands-on workshop includes:
- Introduction to Natural Fantasy - Master's thesis project.
- Natural and processed resources and their relation with us (especially with our emotions)
- DIY natural inks recipes.
- Emotions visualization through meditation and drawing techniques.
- Learning about bio-materials (e.g. wood cellulose) and creating simple 3D models of the emotions.
- Dialogues techniques for releasing emotions in nature.
- Promoting universal values for learning processes.
- Co-creation, feedback and ethical discussion.

Information about workshop instructor:
Sara Lucia is a Designer with a graduate degree in Public Leadership from Colombia. Currently, she is taking her master in Creative Sustainability at Aalto University. Before starting the master’s programme, she was working in Colombia for five years in developing creative and engaging hands-on learning experiences across sectors for different purposes and audiences. She is passionate about creative and inspirational practices for human and ecological well-being in local contexts.
During the programme first year, she has focused on understanding how we, humans, build our mental structures (patterns, behaviours, emotions, etc.) and learning about existing tools from different disciplines and cultures (e.g. Germany, India, England, Finland) that allow us to transform them. Afterwards, for her master’s thesis - Natural Fantasy - she has been bringing together different tools and biomaterials in order to design hands-on learning experiences for children's emotional well-being.
Natural Fantasy is thesis project being developed in collaboration with Biofilia, Aalto-yliopisto Junior, CHEMARTS, Human Neuroscience and Technology and Creative Sustainability programmes at Aalto University.
